Episodes regularly featured music as part of the plot by Danny Thomas, guest stars and occasionally by other cast members. In March 1. 95. 3, Danny Thomas first signed the contract for the show with ABC and chose Desilu Studios to film it using its three- camera method. Jean Hagen played his serious and loving wife Margaret, Sherry Jackson their daughter Terry, and Rusty Hamer their son Rusty. The show's premise dealt with Danny rarely having time to spend with his family and Margaret dealing with the children on her own. Margaret often felt neglected by her husband and on several occasions felt like leaving him. Margaret was a society woman and strict with the children but loved her family. Louise Beavers made several appearances during this era as the Williams' maid, Louise Evans, and often found herself at odds with Danny and sided with Margaret in most fights between the couple. Nana Bryant appeared often as Margaret's kind mother, who Danny and the children were fond of; but Margaret, who had been raised by her aunt and uncle because of her mother being away on stage tours often, was not as warm towards her mother. Bryant died in late 1. During 1. 95. 5, Louise Beavers became ill and Amanda Randolph took over the role of Louise. Series changes. Edit. For its first three years, Make Room For Daddy garnered decent ratings but failed to make the list of the top 3. Shortly after the third season finished filming, Jean Hagen left the show due to dissatisfaction with her role and frequent clashes with Danny Thomas. Thomas was upset with her for leaving as he felt the show would not last without her, but he decided to push on without Hagen. At the start of the fourth season, the series title was changed to The Danny Thomas Show. Both Thomas and producer Sheldon Leonard were faced with a serious dilemma - how to explain Jean Hagen's absence on the show. To have Danny and Margaret Williams separate and divorce would have been unacceptable to television audiences at that time. So, it was explained that Margaret had died suddenly off- screen. Up until this time, no character on a situation comedy had died. When will be The Danny Thomas Hour next episode air date? Is The Danny Thomas Hour renewed or cancelled? Find bio, credits and filmography information for Danny Thomas on AllMovie - Born Muzyad Yakhoob, he began his show biz career in 1932 as a singer at a Detroit radio. Danny had Louise and his friends often looking after the children while he was still touring. He decided to move them to a boarding school but later relented and the family moved into a new apartment. During the season, Danny dated a few other women and nearly got engaged to a widowed singer until he found out she didn't like children. By season's end, the ratings had suffered and it was decided that a wife / mother was needed to complete the family unit. In a four- part story arc that began airing in April, 1. Rusty fell ill with the measles and Danny hired Kathy O'Hara (Marjorie Lord), a young Irish nurse, to look after him. Kathy was a widow with a little girl (played by Lelani Sorenson). Danny and Kathy became fast friends and Danny fell in love with her very quickly as did the kids. In the season finale, Kathy proposed to Danny (as Danny was too nervous to do so himself) and the two became engaged. At this time, ABC canceled the series which proved to be fortunate. In the spring of 1. I Love Lucy, which had reigned supreme as the top- rated show for almost all of its six- year run on CBS, was ending production. When CBS heard that ABC was canceling The Danny Thomas Show, they picked it up for their fall season line up adding it to the 1. The fifth season premiere episode . The Williams family moved into a larger, brand new apartment and with the change of network, the producers also changed Kathy's daughter. Lelani Sorenson was dropped from the cast and replaced by Angela Cartwright as Linda. Linda was then adopted by Danny, and the show's ratings dramatically increased. During this season, Amanda Randolph was sick and rarely appeared as Louise. The majority of the season, Louise was said to be recovering from the flu and Kathy was seen doing most of the housework. In the early part of the sixth season, Sherry Jackson left the show and the character of Terry was said to have gone to a girls school in Paris. According to an interview posted on IMDB, Jackson commented on her close friendship with Jean Hagen and why she left the series. She and I were best buddies; she was my only friend from the . What made me specifically want to leave the show? I had a five- year contract, Jean had a three- year contract. Jean was thoroughly fed up with the series and made it clear that she didn't want to come back. When she left, I was devastated. I didn't want to continue, either. I wanted to break my contract. They wouldn't let me leave, but gave me less to do; that's why I'm in fewer shows from ages 1. Terry was featured in a seven- episode story arc which saw her engaged and eventually married to Pat Hannigan (Pat Harrington, Jr.), a nightclub friend of Danny's. After the wedding, the Hannigans moved to California and Terry was rarely mentioned and she and Pat were never seen in the program again. In the last two seasons, Danny and Kathy both regularly traveled (Danny Thomas and Marjorie Lord were tired from their roles and decided to reduce them to a degree) and much of the tenth season they were touring Europe (a handful of episodes featured location shot footage from Europe) and Rusty and Linda were looked after by Danny's manager, Charlie Halper (Sid Melton) and his wife, Bunny (Pat Carroll). During the eleventh and final season, Thomas decided to retire from the show and the program ended in spring 1. At this time, it was still one of the most popular television programs, ranking at #9. Other notable guest stars included band leader and musician Harry James, who appeared in the episode . Shortly after filming the second special in 1. Randolph died suddenly of a stroke at the age of seventy. There was then a CBS reunion special, Make Room for Granddaddy, in 1. The special did so well that it was picked up as a series by CBS but Thomas considered the slot they gave it to a quiet slot and pulled the show. ABC brought it back on a weekly basis in 1. Make Room for Granddaddy. For the series premiere, Sherry Jackson reprised her role of oldest daughter Terry. There was no mention of her husband Pat Hannigan. Instead, for this new version of the series, Terry's husband was named Bill, who was a soldier. In this episode, Terry left her son, 6- year- old Michael (played by Michael Hughes) in the care of his grandparents (Danny and Kathy) so she could join Bill, who was stationed overseas. In addition to Marjorie Lord, Rusty Hamer, and Angela Cartwright, the only other returning regulars were Sid Melton as Charley Halper and Hans Conried as Uncle Tonoose. During that season, new characters were played by Stanley Myron Handelman and former football player Roosevelt Grier. The show lasted only one year, producing 2. According to Marjorie Lord, the series faced many obstacles including the unprofessionalism and inexperience of the child actor Michael Hughes; the absence of Sheldon Leonard as producer/director to control Thomas and improve the quality of the scripts; and the fact that ABC switched the time slot of the show from Wednesday nights at 8: 0. As a result, the ratings went from mediocre to poor. But he has here, I believe, an equal screen presence. We always knew we were looking at John Wayne in the original . When we see Rooster Cogburn in this version, we're not thinking about Jeff Bridges. Advertisement. Wayne wanted his tombstone to read, Feo, Fuerte y Formal (Ugly, Strong and Dignified). He was a handsome, weathered man when I met him in the 1. Jeff Bridges occupies the character like a homeless squatter. I found myself wondering how young Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) could endure his body odor. Bridges' interpretation is no doubt closer to the reality of a lawman in those years of the West. How savory can a man be when he lives in saloons and on horseback? Not all riders on the range carried a change of clothes. Of course he's a lawman with an office and a room somewhere in town, but for much of the movie, he is on a quest through inauspicious territory to find the man who murdered Mattie's father. As told in the novel, Mattie is a plucky young teen with a gaze as level as her hat brim. She hires Marshal Cogburn to track down that villain Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). She means to kill him for . Steinfeld was 1. 3 when she made the film, close to the right age. Darby was a little over 2. The story hinges on the steely resolve of a girl who has been raised in the eye- for- an eye Old West, seen some bad sights and picked up her values from the kind of old man who can go and get hisself shot. What strikes me is that I'm describing the story and the film as if it were simply, if admirably, a good Western. That's a surprise to me, because this is a film by the Coen Brothers, and this is the first straight genre exercise in their career. Their craftsmanship is a wonder. Their casting is always inspired and exact. The cinematography by Roger Deakins reminds us of the glory that was, and can still be, the Western. But this isn't a Coen Brothers film in the sense that we usually use those words. It's not eccentric, quirky, wry or flaky. It's as if these two men, who have devised some of the most original films of our time, reached a point where they decided to coast on the sheer pleasure of good old straightforward artistry. This is like Iggy Pop singing . So let me praise it for what it is, a splendid Western. The Coens having demonstrated their mastery of many notes, including many not heard before, now show they can play in tune. Besides, isn't Rooster Cogburn where Jeff Bridges started out 4. The first time I was aware of him was in . Since then, that clean- faced young man has lived and rowdied and worked his way into being able to play Rooster with a savory nastiness that Wayne could not have equaled. All the same, the star of this show is Hailee Steinfeld, and that's appropriate. This is her story, set in motion by her, narrated by her. This is Steinfeld's first considerable role. She sidesteps the opportunity to make Mattie adorable. Mattie doesn't live in an adorable world. Seeing this one, few people would get a crush on Hailee Steinfeld. Maybe in another movie. But the way she plays it with the Coens, she's more the kind of person you'd want guarding your back. Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper have weight and resonance in supporting roles. Damon is La. Boeuf, the Texas Ranger who comes along for a time to track Tom Chaney. Glen Campbell had the role earlier, and was right for the tone of that film. Damon plays it on a more ominous note. His La. Boeuf isn't sidekick material. He and Cogburn have long- standing issues. Nor, we discover, is La. Boeuf a man of simple loyalty. As Tom Chaney, Brolin is a complete and unadulterated villain, a rattlesnake who would as soon shoot Mattie as Rooster. In the Western genre, evil can be less nuanced than in your modern movies with all their psychological insights. Barry Pepper plays Lucky Ned Pepper, leader of a gang Chaney ends up with, and part of the four- man charge across the meadow into Rooster's gunfire, a charge as lucky for them as the Charge of the Light Brigade. The 1. 96. 9 film, directed by Hollywood veteran Henry Hathaway, had glorious landscapes. The meadow and several other scenes were set in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, near Telluride. This film's landscapes are all in Texas, and although some are beautiful, many are as harsh and threatening as the badlands described by Cormac Mc. Carthy or Larry Mc. Murtry. I expect Bridges and Stein. Steinfeld is good the whole way through, but the scene audiences love is the one where she bargains with a horse trader (Dakin Matthews) for the money she feels is owed her. Here the key is the dialogue by the Coens, which never strains, indeed remains flat and common sense, as Mattie reasons the thief out of his money by seeming to employ his own logic. I'm surprised the Coens made this film, so unlike their other work, except in quality. Instead of saying that now I hope they get back to making . What about the musical? Western film - True Grit (2. On a hillside overlooking Beverly Hills is a house that “vibrates with the love that created it,” says its owner, actress Jennifer Aniston.“I want to say this just right,” she muses. And I want to celebrate the people who made it: the master craftsmen who poured so much of themselves into its creation.” Not the least of these is designer Stephen Shadley, who worked with her on the project for nearly two and a half years. He and Aniston had come close to working together on two other residences.“I'd heard about this place, and when I saw it, I loved it. The house, which was designed by architect Harold W. Levitt in 1. 97. 0, was under renovation at the time and was, Shadley recalls, “in rough shape. We essentially tore the house apart and rebuilt it.”Rough shape or not, from the moment Aniston saw the house, she knew it was hers, though it took the woman who owned it seven months to agree to sell it. She says it was the front doors: big, proud, dramatic 1. The result is an open, airy home that, she says, “has been inside me for a long time.”View Slideshow. Shadley extended the eaves, which were clad in cumaru, and put in travertine flooring. The umbrellas are from Janus et Cie. Working with the building team of Terry Goebel and Scott Werker, Aniston and Shadley created a slightly Asian, even Balinese, feel for the single- level house, which seems to perch directly on a view of Los Angeles.“She told me at the outset she wanted a quiet, Zen- like retreat that also had a sense of drama for entertaining,” says Shadley. Indeed, the house has a decidedly tropical feel. The doors Aniston fell in love with now open from a travertine bridge that spans a koi pond. Hanging in the hall just inside is a spectacular Murano glass chandelier, one of the first pieces purchased for the property. The team rebuilt the house's massive sliding glass panels, including a 2. It's enough stone, quips Shadley, to create “our own little Getty.”The palette throughout was drawn from the texture and richness of Brazilian cumaru, which was used for eaves, floors and walls. Much of the wood, Aniston notes, was not cut but harvested from fallen trees—a nod to her desire for an eco- friendly environment. Extensive solar panels were also installed on the roof.“I can just imagine the Rat Pack stopping by,” says Aniston. She has happy memories from her childhood of her parents—both actors—having friends over for poker or charades. When people gather at her house, they tend to congregate in the game room, with its vintage pool table and view of Los Angeles in the distance, or in the kitchen.“The house has a rather glamorous, old- fashioned Hollywood quality,” she says. A 1. 92. 0s Thai gong calls diners to partake at the long walnut table. But Aniston says her favorite room is the kitchen, with its pizza oven and wine room. She fondly remembers sitting on her parents' kitchen counter as a kid, talking and laughing. She still finds that the kitchen is the place she ends up most often. The master suite is reached by a long hall populated with photographs taken by Mark Shaw for Life magazine depicting models being fitted backstage at a Pierre Balmain couture show in 1. Drawn to their intimate quality, Aniston says she knew immediately that they were right for the house. In a windowed alcove at the end of the hall is a 1. Chinese scholar reputed to be the world's first expert on the pulse. The symbolism is not lost on her. The master bedroom, with its clean lines, is true to its 1. The suite originally had his- and- her baths, but Aniston has turned the “his” into a spa bath with a soaking tub. The master suite opens onto a private garden designed by Coral Browning and Marcello Villano, who were responsible for the lush landscaping throughout the property. How does Jennifer Aniston describe her house? People can get so distracted by static, I love the silence here.”Asked if she enjoyed the process of creating the home, the actress gives an emphatic “Yes.” And with a touch of unself- conscious bravado, she adds, “I was 1. Designing a house is like doing a movie: Once you're done, you want to say, 'I hope you all enjoy it.'” It is clear that she does. Related: See More Celebrity Homes in AD.
